What is important about a baseline in IT?

There is no one size fits all approach to cybersecurity and there is no single-stop solution for preventing and suppressing all of the malicious activities that threaten our businesses and our personal information.  There are several reasons why a baseline is important, including security, making sure that the data on whatever systems you have or maintain is safe, etc.

This means that we need to run baselines for security measures when adding new devices to the network, as well as anytime we modify the system. Updates are essential!

Baseline security can be interpreted in a number of ways.

Why have a baseline?

Because it’s a very important thing that we need to consider. The baselining process is for the security of systems and data and consists of a set of security controls intended to provide minimum protection for data in a given application, security path, operating system, browser, device, or software. Additionally, it is continuously monitored. Therefore, as updates, improvements, or modifications are made to the systems, new vulnerabilities may also be introduced, causing the baseline to need to be updated. Essentially, this is the process of creating a security checklist and comparing everything overtime against the checklist.

When a proper baseline is not captured, there can be issues such as data breaches, data leaks about where the data is located on the servers, and it can lead to financial institutions running into intellectual property theft, or pretty much anything bad that can happen when information becomes compromised.
