Social media, good, bad, ugly??
While talking with a fellow student, I read some viewpoints that piqued my interest in playing devil's advocate. There was just a lot of bashing of social media and the greater internet, applying the good old days' mindset. Here was my response in summary:
Many aspects of social media and the internet's interconnectedness have been positively impacted. Thus we can communicate anywhere in a few moments, keeping in touch with family, colleagues, and friends. It could be argued that even the fact that we are discussing this topic online in an entirely online class is a social medium of learning. With every downside and toxic chamber out there in the void that is social media / the greater internet. There are sites, blogs, and communities that have been created to give different communities a place to speak and feel heard and safe and well as share knowledge and create positive vibes so to speak. Things like LGBTQ+ and other marginalized groups, science and philosophical collectives, technology programs for the underdeveloped areas, places of shared passion. Collaborations on music, art, and writing are now more feasible than ever before. As well as things like online learning study groups and things that help people with anxiety issues with dealing with large groups of people. These are all more positive notes to how social media has been beneficial to us. And I think that simply writing it off as saying “this world of social media sucks and I feel sorry for the upcoming generations, good luck to them!” doesn’t really over any insight or constructive feedback on what we can or can’t do. It might sound as if I over-broadened the subject matter, but social media and the technology of sharing information are all included within it. Again, I’m not trying to belittle your beliefs or point of view on it. Just pointing out that sometimes it is a matter of perspective that makes all the difference.
Even know I started this blog to get away from the toxic aspects of Facebook it doesn't mean to burn the whole house down or throw the baby out with the bathwater...
